Little America has been our dream for 18 years. We have just begun to realize that dream and will be building it here in the Richland Center area. It all started when we had our daughter 18 years ago. Cindy was born with Down Syndrome, a genetic abnormality that gives her an extra 21st chromosome. Although this causes her to need more help than the normal child, it doesn’t prevent her from leading a normal life with minimal help and guidance. Cindy is absolutely the sweetest person you’ll ever meet – she gives strangers hugs and always has something nice to say. She is completely capable of taking care of herself for the most part (don’t let her use the stove though – she cooks eggs from the opposite side!). Considering the fact that we will not always be there, we were not pleased with the options we were presented – namely: group homes, institutions and halfway houses. The idea of “Little America” came into being. This is NOT an institution, it is a community where people with developmental delays can work, live and exercise their freedoms as any other American. |
